Teeth are kept alive by the pulp, which is a live tissue made up by cells and blood vessels inside the tooth that goes from the crown (the visible part) to the root (inside the bone, under the gum).
When the tooth’s pulp is affected, two situations may arise: the pulp may be irreversibly inflamed or even infected. These cause the pulp to lose its vitality and it becomes necessary to do a root canal.
In a root canal procedure, the diseased tissue is eliminated, and the inside of the tooth disinfected, and then conducts are filled or sealed. This prevents losing a tooth due to an infection. |
